A man who reported his father missing on Long Island faces charges that include conspiracy to commit insurance fraud.

Jonathan Roth was arraigned Tuesday in Hempstead.

His girlfriend said outside court that he's innocent and cannot afford his bail. It's $5,000 cash or $10,000 bond.

Raymond Roth vanished on July 28. The massive air and water search cost tens of thousands of dollars.

Police believe Raymond Roth was in Florida after he went missing.

Then, last Thursday, he got a speeding ticket in Santee, S.C.

The officer who stopped him found Roth's name in a national registry of missing people. Roth said he was returning to New York, and the officer let him proceed north.

His whereabouts Tuesday were still unknown.

The attorney representing Raymond Roth's wife and stepmother of Jonathan Roth, said his client was trying to put her life back together after reportedly filing for divorce.

Evana Roth said she feared for her life.

"We hope that the Nassau County District Attorney conducts a full and fair investigation and that, if necessary, a jury will determine who is guilty of these alleged crimes," said attorney Len Leeds.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
