Twitter threat to theater prompts massive NYPD response

MYFOXNY.COM -

Heavily armed NYPD Hercules teams kept a close eye on the Longacre Theater in Manhattan on Tuesday night after someone on Twitter threatened to carry out a shooting rampage there.

The NYPD filed a subpoena to force Twitter to reveal the identity of the user who made the threat, the New York Post and AP reported.

The Twitter posts referred to a massacre similar to the one carried out at a movie theater in Aurora, Colo.

After the subpoena, police received new information from Twitter "that we're using as part of our ongoing investigation," an NYPD spokesman said. He offered no further details, the AP reported.

A Twitter spokeswoman declined to comment Tuesday.

"This ... ain't no joke yo — I'm serious, people are gonna die like aurora," was reportedly posted to Twitter on Friday.

Twelve people were killed and 58 wounded in the shooting at an Aurora movie theater.

Detectives reportedly sent an "emergency request" to Twitter to reveal the person's identity, but Twitter refused until the subpoena was issued.

The threat was made on opening night of the new show "Mike Tyson Undisputed Truth," directed by Spike Lee.

"Luckily they found this information. That's the main thing. Twitter will evaluate this.  There was no specific time, weapon. There is more to the story than just what we're reading here," said Security Expert Robert Strang during Good Day New York on Tuesday.
