Police increase security at Sikh temples in NYC

MYFOXNY.COM -

The NYPD are increasing their patrols of Sikh temples around the city after the shooting in Wisconsin Sunday.

In the Richmond Hill section of Queens, a officer was seen talking to the temples president.

Although the shooting happened thousands of miles away, worshippers here are worried.

What is a normally a day of peaceful worship for these Sikhs here in Richmond Hill has now also become one of concern.

Sikh worshippers gathered outside their temple to talk about the shooting at a Sikh temple at a suburb of Milwaukee that's so far left seven dead.

As a result of the shooting, the NYPD is increasing coverage at New York City Sikh temples.

The NYPD is also deploying its critical response vehicles as a precaution.

Right now there are no known threats against any local Sikh temples.

Sikhs practice a religion known as Sikhism. Worshippers say because of their turbans and long beards many confuse them for other religions and they may have been wrongly targeted.

"It does scare you. It's not good for our nation," said one member of the Sikh community.
