The son of a man who police believe tried to stage his own death off the coast of Long Island says he had no role in his father's scheme and that his father threatened to kill him.
47-year-old Raymond Roth of Massapequa went swimming off Jones Beach on July 28. Roth didn't return and was presumed dead after an extensive rescue search.
In a strange turn of events, Roth was stopped for speeding in South Carolina on August 2.
Roth's wife in a press conference on August 3 said she believed her stepson, Jason Roth, 22, help fake his father's death to collect life insurance money and could prove it with emails to support her claim.
Roth told the New York Post that he knows nothing about the emails and that his father has threatened him.
New York State Police have contacted Raymond Roth who told them he was heading back to New York. Another report says Roth returned to New York on Saturday, but that police have not decided whether to charge him with a crime.
