Shooting at Sikh temple leaves 7 dead, including suspect

Posted: Updated:

Police in Wisconsin say seven people are dead at a Sikh temple near Milwaukee after a shooter opened fire Sunday morning. The gunman was shot and killed by police.

Witnesses at the scene told a local news station that a man walked into the temple located on South Howell Avenue in Oak Creek, a suburb of Milwaukee, and started shooting around 10:30 a.m.

Authorities say when they arrived they found four people shot dead inside the building and three people dead outside. The temple's president was among those shot.

The suspect was one of those killed outside, according to police. The suspect fired at the first officer to arrive, the officer fired back and killed the suspect.

A priest said women and children were hiding in closets inside the temple.

Authorities said they do not believe a second shooter was involved and officer who shot the suspect is at an area hospital in surgery.

Two victims were treated at Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee.

Sikh rights groups have reported a rise in bias attacks since the September 11th terrorists attacks.

The Washington-based Sikh Coalition has reported more than 700 incidents in the U.S. since 9/11.
