Rats invading apartments at Morris Houses

Posted: Updated:
MYFOXNY.COM -

It appears the rats have gone from playing in the courtyard of the Morris Houses in the Bronx to also playing in people's apartments.

Gertrude Mercer's son killed a 17-inch rat in her apartment last week. She lives on the seventh floor of tower one of the Morris Houses. It was one of several she's seen inside her home.

Gertrude showed us the holes in the kitchen wall she says they're coming in through. She has barricaded the kitchen to keep them in. Her grandson told us he saw one last night.

Gertrude and her family aren't alone.

A tenant on the 11th floor, who didn't want to be on camera, showed us the hole he taped up today in his shower, where he says rats have been coming through.

This is the first time we've heard of rats being inside. Earlier this year, we did a series of stories about the rat infestation outside the buildings.

The New York City Housing Authority took action after our first story ran in January, laying poison that seemed to help. It killed rats on the grounds outside.

But Gertrude says it looks like they're just coming inside instead.

The NYCHA told her repairs on her walls would be done next month.

For now, she is on daily rat patrol.

Fox 5 reached out to the NYCHA for comment. We have not heard back.
