SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -

August means it's time to start gearing up for back to school, and if you're in the market for a new laptop, it pays to shop early.

Right now you can choose from several great bundle deals from top of the line companies like Apple and Windows.

New and returning college students should be sure to check with retailers about the possibility of a college discount.

"Windows is offering a ... free Xbox 360 if you buy certain types of computer software.  Apple may give you a gift card toward other Apple products.  That's worth looking into.  Your child's college may have a special computer offer, and even if you can prove your a student at a college you may be able to get a good deal.  So you need to be able to play that college card no matter what kind of computer you're buying," said Janet Bodner with Kiplinger's Personal Finance.

The lowest price isn't always the best deal when it comes to buying a laptop.  There are several key factors you need to consider to make sure you're getting the most for your money.

Topping the list is battery life.  Experts say look for one that gets at least five and a half hours per charge.  Click here to see the rest of the list of laptop essentials from Laptop Magazine.
