Democrat Malcolm Smith considering run for mayor on GOP line

Posted: Updated:
MYFOXNY.COM -

Former Senate Majority Leader Malcolm Smith, a Democrat, is considering running for mayor of New York City on the Republican line, the New York Post first reported.

He confirmed that news to Fox 5's Linda Schmidt.

Smith represents a liberal part of Queens but he supports some decidedly non-liberal issues, such as stop-and-frisk and expanding charter schools.

Smith said he is focused on his reelection to the state Senate, but after that may consider running for mayor. He said he had spoken to some GOP leaders about it.

He would not have to switch parties to appear on the GOP ballot line. Instead, Smith would need to get three of the five Republican county part bosses to support him.
