No big noise from Mets or Yanks at trade deadline

The clock turned to 4:01 p.m. and trade talks officially ceased. You could hear the tumbleweeds passing by Citi Field as the Mets made no acquisitions and maybe a few cheers at Yankee Stadium.

Neither team made a move that was worthy enough to say whether they were winners or losers of the trade deadline.

The Philadelphia Phillies and Miami Marlins traded away many players, giving the notion they are preparing for the 2013 season and want to free up space for the winter months.

Could the Mets have benefited from trading away prospect?

Yes, but would it be in their best interest? No. The New York Mets only trading option was Scott Hairston, who is mainly a fastball pull hitter that can do damage against lefties. Other than that, the Mets could not really gain from giving him away to a playoff bound team like Texas or Detroit.

After Hairston, you have many young players who possess a lot of potential, but need to refine and mature as players. You certainly would not fathom to trade away Matt Harvey after two quality starts and has shown to be great for a diminishing rotation after their praise before the All-Star break.

The Mets could not make any moves because they have no one to give and don't forget, David Wright is going to be a free agent. Before any other moves, re-signing David Wright is at the top of GM Sandy Alderson's list.

Let's take the RFK to Yankee Stadium.

The Yankees made some noise a week ago trading for 38-year-old Ichiro Suzuki, hoping to replace Brett Gardner who is done for the year due to injuries. However as always, the Yankees were in the middle of the noise of trade talks even though they really had no motive to trade for any star player.

Sure they were in talks with the Cubs and Ryan Dempster, but that quickly faded once the Rangers swooped in and took Dempster to add to their phenomenal rotation.

The only move the Yankees made was acquiring Casey McGehee from the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for relief pitcher Chad Qualls. Not a big move in the slightest considering McGehee will be used as a utility player for the Yankees.

Ironic considering A. J. Burnett is a star in Pittsburgh with the season he is having.

The Yankees have lost nine of their past twelve games, a big concern especially when you were 23 games above .500 and now only 11.
The Yankees have a team to go far with, but instead of focusing on playoffs and who will you face, maybe you should check the rear-view mirror and see that your division rivals are closing in.

It is surprising that two teams who are having horrendous performances as of late make no big time moves.

Los Angeles Angels, Los Angeles Dodgers, Texas Rangers, San Francisco Giants, all these teams made big moves in the midst of hunting for a playoff spot.

While the Mets are mathematically in contention, their season is looking very bleak and they only have two months to change course and catch fire again.

The Yankees are a playoff team, but maybe Bobby Valentines words are revealing something under the radar that we do not see from this team. The Yankees have seem beatable and are free falling just like the Mets.

Maybe it's that New York water.

All jokes aside, both teams were awfully quiet in a city that is awfully rowdy. Both have their reasons, but like Bobby V. said, crazy things happen in this game. Maybe the Mets will catch fire, maybe this is just a funk the Yankees get out of.

Or, maybe it may be a telling sign that a New York team may not be in the 2012 MLB playoffs.
