Mario Serrano has been a Long Island mail carrier for 27 years. He recently helped an elderly resident on his Garden City route after she had fallen in her bathroom and was trapped for more than 48 hours.
Serrano noticed her mail had piled up at her St. Pauls Crescent home.
He also heard some sounds coming from the bathroom, but thinking the muffled sounds were singing, he continued on his route.
As he finished for the day he felt that something just wasn't right and went back to the house.
After ringing the doorbell, he heard the woman scream "help" from the bathroom.
Serrano ripped open the window and got to the woman. He stayed with her until her rescue.
Crews had to remove the toilet to free her.
The woman, who did not want to be identified, was being treated at Winthrop Hospital.
Serrano's postmaster, Annette D'Amato, has recommended him for a recognition award but Serrano says he doesn't consider himself a hero.
