A rabies alert has been issued to Westchester Country residents.

A rabid cat was spotted in Elmsford on Winthrop Avenue between White Plans Avenue and Payne Street.

The cat was an adult charcoal gray short-haired cat with yellowish-green eyes and a dirty coat.
It had tried to attack a woman and a man in the neighborhood before it attacked a police officer, who had responded.

The officer shot and killed the cat.  It tested positive for rabies.  The officer has begun treatment.

Earlier in July, a rabid kitten was spotted in New Rochelle.

Anyone who believes that they or a pet may have had contact with stray cats or kittens during the past month in these areas should contact the Westchester County Department of Health at (914) 813-5159.
