A routine police patrol of the Long Island Sound lead to the rescue of a 1,000 lb. sea turtle.

Two police officers for the Suffolk County Marine Bureau responded to a call Monday night from a pleasure boat that the turtle was entangled in lines of several lobster pots, said Suffolk County Police.

The officers called in workers from the Riverhead Foundation's Rescue program to assist in freeing the reptile near Mount Sinai Harbor.

The six-foot long, female Leatherback turtle weighed 1,000 lbs., said police.

Once freed, it swam away on its own.

The Leatherback sea turtle is on the U.S. Endangered Species list.

Some of the largest recorded Leatherbacks have been seven feet long and more than 2,000 lbs.

The species can dive deeper than any other turtle, according to marine life experts.

All boaters who spot stranded or entangled marine life should contact the Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau.
