Several blocks were flooded and homes evacuated in Scotch Plains, New Jersey Tuesday following a massive water main break.
A pipe burst underground at Portland Ave. and Birch St. at about 4 a.m.
Aerial footage of the scene showed water gushing from the ground several hours later.
The water appeared to have been turned off at about 6:45 a.m.
Crews were on the scene pumping out water from a massive sinkhole formed by the crater, reported Antwan Lewis.
Concrete and debris from the pipe and the road that was damaged from the water's pressure littered the area.
Antwan spoke with a woman who said she was wearing a nightgown when she grabbed her boots and ran out as the water approached her front door in the dark of night.
The water flooded several basements.
A resident told MyFoxNY.com that water service was shut down to homes several blocks from the scene of the ruptured pipe.
Water service was reportedly restored Tuesday afternoon but residents were told to expect low pressure until at least late Wednesday morning.
Crews on the scene must first assess the 48-inch pipe to determine why it broke and how long it would take to repair.
