9/11 tiles to be added to MTA plant wall

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (AP) -

A memorial that sprung up at a Greenwich Village lot a day after the Sept. 11 attacks will be incorporated into the exterior of a planned MTA ventilation plant.

The so-called Tiles for America started off as a group of angel figures tied to a fence as get-well messages to those who were injured in the attacks. It soon turned into a site including thousands of ceramic squares honoring the dead.

The New York Post says the tiles will be placed on the plant's lower exterior wall.

MTA spokesman Kevin Ortiz said officials worked hard to come up with a design that would please residents.

But not everyone is happy.

Andrew Berman of the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation says it looks like a brick-faced tomb.
