Central N.J. storm causes thousands to lose power

Posted: Updated:

Thousands of residents in central New Jersey remain without power after severe thunderstorms moved through the region.

The storms, which created heavy rains and lightning, hit Monmouth and Ocean counties early Saturday afternoon. Lakewood appeared to be hit the hardest, along with Toms River and Brick Townships.

Jersey Central Power and Light said about 30,000 customers lost power during the storms.

JCP & L said about 5,400 customers were still without electricity as of 11:00 a.m. Sunday but all customers should have their service restored by Sunday afternoon at the latest.

The storms damaged several tents and the grounds at the Monmouth County Fair in Freehold Township. The damage caused officials to cancel the fair's final day of events on Sunday.
