Hundreds of mourners attended a funeral service on Staten Island for a final goodbye to 15-year-old Nicholas Delleventura Saturday morning.

Delleventura was a high school football player who collapsed and died after football practice on July 23.

The service was held at Our Lady Star of the Sea among family, friends and his teammates. The St. Joseph's by-the-Sea Vikings were dressed in their blue varsity jerseys and many overcome with grief.

"Very depressing, all of his good things he did …I'm sorry for getting a little emotional," said Mario Coca, a friend of the family.

Delleventura, a sophomore football player at St. Joseph by-the-Sea High School, collapsed and died after a 90 minute preseason training session.

The temperature was in the mid 80's during the voluntary practice. It is still unclear if the weather played a roll in his death.

"It's always hard for the family. Nicky was a loving kid. It's a real great feeling with all his friends and family being here," said Monsignor Jeff Conway.

Monsignor Jeff Conway is the pastor of the parish at Our Lady Star. He says it's the same church where Delleventura was baptized.

Saturday morning it's where the young man's older brother, Danny gave the eulogy and told mourners faith will help the family through the tragedy.

"His brother Danny eulogized him and did a wonderful job," said Monsignor Conway. "He was talking about his faith, what a wonderful person he (Nicholas) was and also about what is to come – and that they are going to meet again."

A medical examiners report into the exact cause of death has not yet been released. Teammates of Nicholas Delleventura say they will dedicate the rest of the football season to him.
