Paddle board fitness offers a way to get in shape while enjoying the water

SYLVAN LAKE, Mich. (WJBK) -

Are you sick of your gym routine?  Then why not take your workout to the water.  Stand up paddle boarding is a great way to get in shape and enjoy the Michigan lakes.

"Stand up paddling is a cross between kayaking and surfing and, I don't know, walking on water, let's say," explained Linda Brown.  "You get yourself popped up and strong core, bring the paddle up and into the water and you're ready to go."

I met up with Brown at Sylvan Lake.  She is the owner and instructor of Paddle the Mitten.

"I always require a safety and instructional class first, lesson first, and then after that, I do what we call guided tours," Brown explained.  "A lot of the times this is a very social sport, so we just go out and have a good time."

"It's such a great workout and not only for a workout in disguise, but it can be anything from social to peace and quite and relaxation, and so it's very inviting to women."

Wind and waves can cause issues when you're out on the water.

"The best conditions are usually in the morning because it's like glass out, and usually towards the end of the evening is a great time to go out.  You can see the sunrise or you can see the sunset."

Bring out your inner Hawaiian and try something new.  For more information, visit www.paddlethemitten.com.
