PHOENIX (AP) - The Arizona Supreme Court is ordering a lower court to hold a hearing on a death row inmate's request to skip further appeals and be executed quickly for a series of random murders in the Phoenix area.

The state high court's order sends Dale Shawn Hausner's case back to Maricopa County Superior Court.

That court is to consider on whether Hausner is competent to waive further appeals and whether Hausner made the request knowingly and voluntarily.

The Supreme Court also ordered that a lawyer be appointed to represent Hausner in the hearing.

Hausner was convicted in the so-called "Serial Shooter" case. He faces death sentences on six counts of first-degree murder.

Hausner made his request after the Supreme Court ruled on an automatic appeal and upheld his death sentences.
