PHOENIX (AP) - Two Phoenix hospitals so far have identified hundreds of people who may have been exposed to hepatitis C through a traveling medical technician facing criminal charges in New Hampshire.
Spokeswoman Teri Bockting says officials have identified 270 patients at Maryvale Hospital and fewer than 200 at the Arizona Heart Hospital who could have been exposed to David Kwiatkowski.
He worked at Maryvale Hospital in 2009 and Arizona Heart Hospital in 2010. He was fired after being spotted with drugs he wasn't
authorized to administer.
The hospitals plan to start sending certified letters to the patients on Monday. The letters will recommend and offer free testing for hepatitis C.
Kwiatkowski is accused of stealing anesthetic drugs from a New Hampshire hospital and contaminating syringes used on patients. Thirty of them have been diagnosed with the same strain of hepatitis C that he carries.
Testing has been recommended for about 4,700
people in New Hampshire alone, and officials are still determining who
needs testing in seven other states, including Arizona.
Officials have confirmed that
Kwiatkowski worked in Arizona, Georgia, Kansas, Maryland, Michigan, New
York and Pennsylvania before being hired in New Hampshire last year.
