Woman gets new van after her old vehicle was stolen, crushed

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) -

We told you a few nights ago about Lanetta Murphy.  Her minivan was stolen and then crushed at a local scrap yard. Now the man who took her vehicle to that scrap yard is coming forward. He says he was scammed, and he's determined to make this right for Murphy and her family.

"I want to know how my car ended up at Fritz and how did you come about crushing it," Murphy said on Monday.

"I saw the news and the heart dropped," said Lavince Marks.

He doesn't know Murphy, but he instantly recognized the minivan because he's the one who took it to the salvage yard, but he says it's not what you may think.

"I had no idea this vehicle was stolen."

He says a guy sold it to him on July 5.

"It was messed up. So, he came to me with a sad story like, 'Oh, today my daughter['s] birthday, and I lost my money at the casino.'"

So Marks says he bought it and made the man sign a receipt and provide a copy of his I.D., which expired in 2009.

"When I looked it up on my phone on AutoCheck, [it] said the car [hadn't] been registered in over a year, and the last time the car was seen was at a recycle center."

However, the one thing Marks says he didn't do was contact the Secretary of State before taking the van to be salvaged.

"They noticed the VIN [number] wasn't quite right, so they came to me and told me that the car looked tagged."

They called Detroit Police. Marks says he talked to police and told them about the guy that sold him the van. A week went by and he says he heard nothing.

"They have my cell phone number and everything."

Then he saw Murphy on Fox 2.

"Woke up the next morning and said, 'Pops, we got to do something.'"

Marks called Fox 2 and asked us to connect him to Murphy so he could apologize and make things right.

"I felt bad because it was my fault, kind of, so we reached out to them, went and got you a new van to try to help you out," Marks told Murphy on Thursday.

"That is touching. I thank you, " she responded.

Marks and his father bought Murphy another van two years newer than her previous one, completely tuned up and ready to go.

So, this is definitely a problem solved, but whoever stole the van is still out on the streets.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
