Social media used to report power outages

ATLANTA -

Georgia Power says you can now report an outage with social media.

Georgia Power's Storm Center is located inside the companies headquarters in downtown Atlanta. It is manned during severe weather events when the power goes out and crews are out in the field making repairs.

Customers can now use Twitter to report a power outage and monitor the status of the repairs.

"With today's smartphones, of course you can go to the internet and go to Georgia Power storm site.  You can get information on outages and how to report them.  In addition, we've got Twitter that we report outage information, that you can send in questions and our corporate communications folk's monitor that and answer people's question," said Aaron Strickland, Georgia Power's distribution manager.

If you plan to report an outage by using your cell phone, Georgia Power says your cell phone number needs to be linked to your account.

"So, if you only have your house phone on there and you call on a cell phone, it makes it a little bit more cumbersome to get the correct information, so getting the all you phone information in your Georgia Power account makes it much easier to look at your account and talk with you," said Strickland.
