A man on the run from Ohio reportedly told a priest at a church in midtown Manhattan that he had killed his girlfriend in Columbus earlier this month.

A fire was set near the woman's battered body, the NY Post reported on Wednesday.

Jonathan Smith, 48, had been living in a homeless shelter in New York City after driving from Columbus. His Acura was towed and never reclaimed, the Post added.

Smith's girlfriend, Darlene Hart, 48, was found badly beaten in their house on July 14.

Smith grabbed a priest at St. Francis of Assisi Church on West 31st Street and said "I want to tell you something... I killed my girlfriend in Columbus, Ohio."

Smith's 'confession' was not considered a sacramental confession and the priest immediately contacted police.
