Car keyless remote dead zone in Yonkers

When customers started flocking to Marden Hardware on busy Yonkers Avenue in Yonkers looking for a certain type of battery, Eric Marden knew something wasn't right. He figured something was going wrong with keyless remotes for cars.

Indeed, something is turning the stretch of road near Page Ave. into the Bermuda triangle for newer model parked cars with keyless remotes, remote ignitions, and aftermarket alarms.

"We've had instances where cars don't have key holes.  It's just a push button start and they couldn't get the car started and had to have the car towed from here, Marden says."

Marden's staff has pushed several cars off of the block so owners can get them started again.

So what's behind the interference? Could it be the wireless antenna on top of a utility poll or cell transmitters on a building?

David Maxson of Massachusetts-based Isotrope was hired by the utility to investigate. He ruled the poles out, believing the problem is an electrical problem at a building on the even-numbered side of the street.

"He said the frequency level was so high it was nearly above FCC regulations," Marden says.

The problems has even affected people at a funeral home on the block.  Customers leaving after making funeral arrangements have not been able to get into their cars.
