Demolition underway on Mumford High School

Posted: Updated:

Demolition of the 63-year-old Samuel C. Mumford High School continues today after beginning last week.

It will take demolition crews about nine weeks to tear down the 240,273-square-foot Art Deco style structure as they make way for a new state of the art facility.

The $52.1 million building is currently under construction on the school's former athletic field and is expected to open this fall.

The campus is located on Wyoming Street in northwest Detroit, between Santa Clara and Thatcher streets.

As Amy Andrews explains, people have mixed emotions about the demolition of the iconic building that educated many notable alumnus.

"It really hurts me to see it come down, this was an incredible building... kids of all races and religions got together well. I'm still friends with a lot of those kids today," said 1962 graduate, Howard Golding.
