Police say an SUV with eight passengers crashed when it hit a concrete pillar, flipped over and burst into flames, killing five people including two children in Queens Sunday morning.
The driver, a 45-year-old woman, a 26-year-old man and a 7-year-old boy were injured in the crash.
Authorities said the 2008 Mercedes Benz SUV was traveling eastbound on Atlantic Avenue around 3:15 a.m. when it hit a concrete pillar that supports the JFK AirTrain east of the Van Wyck Expressway.
The impact of the crash caused the car to flip and sent it rolling over. The mangled vehicle ended up on its side and burst into flames.
Three women were pronounced dead at the scene and an 8-year-old girl and a 9-year-old boy were killed in the crash.
All three crash survivors were taken by EMS to Jamaica Hospital.
The driver was undergoing surgery and the 7-year-old boy was in stable condition in the pediatric emergency room. The 26-year-old man was listed in stable condition and according to a hospital spokeswoman, likely to be treated and soon released.
Police say they have not identified the vehicle's passengers and don't know if they were all related.
