A Connecticut man was able to survive the fatal shooting inside an Aurora, CO movie theater that killed 12 people and wounded 58 early Friday morning.

22-year-old Stephen Barton of Southbury, remains in an Aurora hospital after suffering gunshot wounds to his neck and chest as well as some other wounds to his arm and surrounding areas, according to his brother David.

Barton had surgery to remove shotgun pellets from his neck and chest Friday and is recovering with his parents at his bedside.

Barton recently graduated from Syracuse University and was on a bike trip across the country with a friend and fellow Pomperaug High School alum Ethan Rodriguez-Torrent, a Yale University student. Rodriguez-Torrent was in the movie theater but was not injured, according to a Syracuse Post Standard report.

The suspect James Holmes was taken into custody following the shooting.
