New York’s tough gun control law

The movie theater shooting in Aurora, Colo. has reignited the debate over assault weapons.

Gun laws vary differently from state to state.

The consequences of the weapons sold at the Coliseum Gun Traders in Uniondale, Long Island are not taken lightly.

"Every gun is powerful. Every gun is capable of deadly force," said Andrew Chernoff, store manager at the store.

To buy any of the guns in here -- you must have a permit and pass a federal background check.

"We have very stringent gun control laws in the state of New York," said Chernoff.

Chernoff says one weapon, an AR-15, is similar to the one police say James Holmes used along with a shotgun and two handguns, during the deadly shootings in Colorado.

"Except this gun is not an assault weapon, it does not have a telescope stock and it does not have a bayonet lug," said Chernoff.

Without those features it's not an assault weapon.

It is illegal to buy and sell assault weapons in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut -- but they are OK to buy in Colorado.

"We as legislators don't do enough to stop this kind of gun violence," said Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY).

Representative McCarthy's husband was killed and son wounded in a mass shooting on December 7, 1993 on the Long Island Railroad before she was elected.

In the wake of the Colorado shooting, she's joining some other elected officials -- including Mayor Bloomberg calling for tougher gun rules.

"If it was one of your kids in Aurora, maybe you would stand up and say ‘I'm not going to take this anymore'," said Bloomberg.
