In the wake of a shooting in a suburb of Denver, Colorado that killed at least 12 people and injured 50 others, police in New York City have stepped up security at some movie theaters.

"As a precaution against copycats and to raise the comfort levels among movie patrons in the wake of the horrendous shooting in Colorado, the New York City Police Department is providing coverage at theaters where the 'The Dark Knight Rises' is playing in the five boroughs," said Police Commissioner Ray Kelly.

Batman enthusiasts at an AMC theater in Times Square on Friday said they weren't nervous -- just excited about the premiere.

Two police officers were stationed outside its entrance.

Later in the day, a police cruiser was parked out front with an officer.

Security around the U.S. has stepped up in the aftermath of the massacre in Colorado.

In downtown Washington, theater employees checked patrons' bags and purses while taking their tickets.

Shots rang out at a packed Century 16 movie theater in Aurora at about 12:30 a.m. on Friday.

One patron told the Denver Post he saw some people run and others fall to the ground, including one young girl who was struck in the cheek. He says another girl, who appeared to be about 9 years old, was struck in the stomach.

Police arrested James Holmes, 24, who they say was wearing a gas mask. He was found near a car behind the theater.

Witnesses tell police the suspect released some sort of canister. They heard a hissing sound and some gas emerged and the suspect opened fire.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
