Inkster Police Dept. tries to sell dog to partner

Posted: Updated:
INKSTER, Mich. (WJBK) -

Cuts in Inkster left many police officers without a job. And now, the city is hoping to make some money by getting some human officers to buy their canine partners.

When he's at home, Xander's the sweetest dog you'll ever meet. And a big part of Officer Dan Schewe's family. Just ask his daughter Hannah. She says he's like a furry brother.

But when Xander's on the job, it's all business. Officer Schwewe has been Xander's partner and handler for more than 4 years years. Together, they were part of the Inkster Police Department.

But Officer Schewe, along with more than 20 other Inkster police officers, were laid off June 30th. Xander's been home with the Schewe family since the layoff. Then came a phone call telling him he could buy the dog for $2,000.

The police union says in the past, officers have been able to purchase their K-9 for $1 and Shchewe should get the same deal. Late Thursday afternoon, Inkster Police Chief Hilton Napoleon told Fox 2 the city and officer Schewe had reached a deal. He wouldn't give details.

But the good news here is that while Officer Schewe and K-9 Xander may have lost their jobs, they still have each other.
