Detroit City Council votes against union cuts

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) -

The Detroit City Council takes a stand against the Financial Review Board but it might not matter.

Today, members voted down union cuts recommended by the state's financial review team. The cuts would slash all city union workers' pay further and change work rules - all to save the city $100 million dollars.

The vote was close with 5 members voting against the cuts and four in favor of it. Council President Charles Pugh was the deciding fifth vote against it.

He tells Fox 2 he supports the consent agreement but not the steps the board recommends. Councilman James Tate voted in favor of the package which would cut wages by 10%. He says he realized the city is in a very stressful financial situation.

The council vote doesn't matter much, as the board can still proceed with their plans with or without council's approval.
