Drought hits Metro Detroit farmers

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) -

It has already been an extremely hot summer and these high temperatures are having a big effect on the farmers and their precious crops.

The drought that is gripping about 80 percent of the country is the worst since 1956. We've seen massive wildfires and now - devastation among the nation's crops.

This year, farmers planted 5% more corn in anticipation of what was supposed to be a banner year. But the drought, combined with triple digit numbers, has wreaked havoc on their crops.

In its latest report, the USDA says 31% of corn crops - nationwide - are in good or excellent condition. That's a drop from 40% just a week earlier.

Fox 2's Jason Carr went to talk to farmers at Detroit's Eastern Market. Click on the video player to watch his report.
