A woman walking along an Upper East Side street was stabbed on Tuesday morning, police said. Cops are questioning an apparently homeless man who tried to rob her.
The attempted robbery and stabbing happened around 10:30 a.m. on East 86th Street near construction for the 2nd Avenue subway. A construction wall partly shields the sidewalk from view.
The suspect tried to steal the woman's bag, and when she resisted he stabbed her and may have sprayed her with a substance, said Police Commissioner Ray Kelly.
A witness said the woman was stabbed in the abdomen.
Two passersby came across the wounded woman and chased the suspect but didn't catch him, Fox 5's Ti-Hua Chang reported.
Police say they have security camera footage of a man running from the scene.
Police released photos of the suspect before picking up a man for questioning. He appears to be between 5 feet 9 inches and 5 feet 11 inches, about 180 pounds, and has a beard and Afro-style hair. He was last seen wearing a maroon shirt and carrying a backpack, the NYPD said.
The woman was taken to New York Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center. She was listed in stable condition, police said.
Anyone with information about this incident can contact the Crime Stoppers at 800-577-TIPS (8477) or at www.nypdcrimestoppers.com.
