Roads back open after fuel spill in Oak Park

Posted: Updated:
OAK PARK, Mich. (WJBK) -

Greenfield Road is back open between Catalpa and Lincoln after crews finished cleaning a major fuel spill at an Oak Park gas station

It happened at the Marathon gas station at 11 Mile and Greenfield Monday. Over 2,500 gallons of fuel spilled out of a large oil tanker that had just pulled into the station.

Witnesses tell us the driver lost control as he pulled in and hit an embankment. We're told the truck almost turned over. The driver tells us it was a mistake.

Police and fire crews arrived to the scene to contain the leak. Gary Shore with the Oakland County hazardous materials team says some of the fuel entered the sewer system.

Several nearby businesses were evacuated.

The state Department of Environmental Quality is now investigating.
