NYC opens cooling centers

MYFOXNY.COM -

The Office of Emergency Management has opened cooling centers Monday, July 16 in anticipation of the heat wave forecasts for the week. The centers were expected to be open through Tuesday.

The OEM said the public should take precautions to prevent serious illness that can result from the heat, especially senior citizens and those with chronic health problems or mental disability.

New Yorkers are advised to use air conditioning to stay cool, go to a place that has air conditioning if it is not available at home, and drink water at regularly.

Anyone going outdoors should limit strenuous activity and avoid exercise during the hottest parts of the day. The OEM recommends that you check on your vulnerable family, friends, and neighbors, especially if they don't have air conditioning or live alone. Make sure they are in an air-conditioned place and they're staying hydrated.

Cooling centers are air conditioned places, such as Department for the Aging senior centers, Salvation Army community centers, and public libraries that are open to the public during heat emergencies.

To find the cooling center closest to you, call 311 or visit nyc.gov.
