SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -

Oakland University has long been known as a commuter school.  They have multiple housing units, but they can only fit a little over 2,000 people in those dorms.

As enrollment goes up, so does interest in living on campus, and campus housing is filled up for the coming fall semester.

That mean a couple of things.  First, the university is not taking requests for single rooms.  Everyone on campus will have a roommate.  Still they need more room, so the school went across the street and contracted 50 rooms at the Homestead Studio Suites for the upcoming school year.

"The amenities in the hotel are at or above university housing standards.  Having the kitchenette in there is a wonderful thing.  Getting your own queen bed in that location is a wonderful thing.  Having once a week maid service isn't too bad either," said Jim Zentmeyer with Oakland University Housing.  "So the students get a positive experience."

We understand they may have to book even more rooms if their enrollment boom continues.  The school also has proposals in the works to build more dormitories.  They are hoping to get the green light for those some time very soon.
