Suspicious wires were found in a bathroom onboard a flight that was returned to Kennedy International airport, but no explosive device was found.

New York Police Department spokesman Paul Browne says Delta Flight 126 bound for Madrid was returned to the gate and evacuated Thursday after a report of a suspicious device aboard. The flight took off at 8 p.m. and it landed around 10 p.m.

Officials briefly questioned a male and female passenger and released them.

Authorities say wires were found in the lavatory that apparently did not belong to the plane.

The Transportation Security Administration said the plane taxied to a remote location and passengers were escorted off. "The aircraft was searched with negative results," the TSA said in a statement.

Footage from Fox 5's SkyFoxHD showed the plane surrounded by emergency vehicles on the taxiway.

Delta spokeswoman Sarah M. Lora said in a statement that the flight was returned to JFK "out of an abundance of caution" and that "the flight landed safely."

Delta reported that the plane was rescheduled to depart JFK at 3:10 a.m. and was to arrive in Madrid at 3:41 p.m. local time.

The airline says that there were three pilots, seven flight attendants and 206 passengers.
