76-year-old charged with killing grandson faces judge

PONTIAC, Mich. (WJBK) -

Prosecutors are continuing to build their case against the local grandmother charged with killing her 17-year old grandson.

Jonathan Hoffman died after he was shot five times. 76-year Sandra Lane made a brief appearance on Thursday for her circuit court arraignment. Wearing an orange jump suit and shackles Lane stared straight ahead and stayed silent before the judge.

Lane who faces Open Murder and Felon Firearms charges waived the formal reading of the counts that have been filed against her.

According to her lawyer Jerome Sabota, Lane didn't want to hear the charges because she knows what she's accused of doing. The court entered a not guilty plea on her behalf.

Lane is accused of gunning down her grandson last May inside their condo in West Bloomfield. In a call he made to a 911 operator before he died Hoffman said, "my grandma shot me, I'm going to die."

Lane's attorney says his client is prepared to tell her side of the story when the time comes but is torn up inside by what happened. He claims she was afraid for her life.

Attorneys on both sides are awaiting more evidence in the case before it can be ready for trial.

The next hearing in the case is September 13th.
