NYC taxi commission approves fare hike

The New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission has approved a taxi fare hike that will increase the cost of the average ride by 17 percent.

The commission approved the fare increase by a vote of 6-2 Thursday with one abstention.

The base fare of $2.50 will not increase but the mileage charge will.

The flat-rate fee between Manhattan and Kennedy Airport jump from $45 to $52. The surcharge to travel to or from Newark Liberty International Airport rises from $15 to $17.50.

The commission held a public hearing on Monday to discuss the plan. Most agreed on the fare hike. But disagreement arose with owners over another issue. The hike would not increase the leasing fee paid by drivers.

The Metropolitan Taxicab Board of Trade said that it is reviewing possible legal options.

"By depriving the fleets that own and operate taxis of a needed lease cap increase and shortchanging other leasing operations, the TLC has set the taxi industry on an unsustainable path that, as one commissioner put it, 'is lopsided and it will backfire and end up hurting drivers, owners and the riding public in the end,'" the Metropolitan Taxicab Board of Trade said in the statement.

The last time taxi fares increased was in 2005.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
