People in Westchester are being warned after a woman was bitten by a rabid kitten.

The Westchester County Department of Health issued the rabies alert to residents who may have had contact with the stray since early June.

The stray cat was spotted at the New York Athletic Club and the Winged Foot Day Camp, which are both located at 31 Shore Road in New Rochelle.

The small gray kitten was taken home by a woman, who was caring for the kitten until it became aggressive at bit her last week.

The kitten was taken to the vet's office, where it was euthanized and confirmed rabid.

The kitten may have exposed other cats before it was picked up.

The health department notified residents within a half-mile of the area and produced fliers to warn other people .

"When you see a stray or wild animal acting strangely, it's best to avoid contact with the animal and alert local authorities to avoid possible exposure to rabies," said Westchester County Health Commissioner Sherlita Amler in a statement.   "A woman who was bitten by the kitten is being treated."

Anyone who believes that they or a pet may have had contact with stray cats or kittens during the past month in these areas should contact the Westchester County Department of Health at (914) 813-5159.
