Metro Detroit Youth Day brings in thousands at Belle Isle

Posted: Updated:

Today marks the 30th anniversary for the Metro Detroit Youth Day where thousands of youngsters gathered at the athletic field of Belle Isle.

Ed Deeb, one of the co-founders of Metro Detroit Youth Day, said, "We have over 30 thousand kids here today and they're going to be treated to all kinds of games, sports clinics, entertainment, a free lunch -- all kinds of things."

Youth Day is a catalyst in channeling children's energy in a positive and constructive setting. Special games and activities are also included for the growing number of disabled or handicapped youngsters participating.

The Metro Detroit Youth Day also recognizes young students who will soon begin a college career.

"College row is new. We have approximately 10 colleges and universities that wanted to be here to talk to the kids. We have an education tent with about 30 organizations who want to talk to the kids. In addition to that we have 80 scholarships we're giving out today to graduating seniors."

"We honor approximately 60 kids for academic achievement and community service, said Deeb."

For many of these eight to fifteen-year-old kids, this is perhaps the first outing they've had all year long besides school.

"Some of the teachers tell us that may be their only vacation all year long, said Deeb. "One day away from home here at beautiful Bell Isle."
