More 'slow zones' coming to NYC

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (AP) -

New York City says it's expanding its program to lower the speed limit in designated areas of more than a dozen neighborhoods.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg on Monday announced an expansion of the city's so-called slow-zone program. It calls for the speed limit to be lowered to 20 mph from 30 mph.

The mayor said the program has helped lower the number of annual traffic fatalities to their lowest levels in decades.

The city transportation department said speeding fell about 10 percent in its first slow-zone area in the Claremont section of the Bronx after it was introduced there in November.

Bloomberg called the program the city's latest tool in its "assault on the No. 1 traffic killer -- speeding."
