A New Jersey judge ruled Tuesday that local authorities can prosecute two former Paramus Catholic High School employees on charges of having sex with 17-year-old students on a school trip to Germany in 2011.

Lawyers for Artur Sopel, formerly the vice president of operations, and Michael Sumulikoski, formerly a substitute teacher and assistant football coach, argued that the state has no jurisdiction in the case because the alleged acts happened outside the United States.

Superior Court Judge James Guida did not buy that argument. He said Sopel and Sumulikoski agreed in New Jersey to chaperone the students during the school's overseas trip and therefore can be prosecuted.

Sopel and Sumulikoski deny doing anything wrong.
