A western New York man was arrested for DWI after hitting a cow.

The New York State Police say that Norman J. Kleever, 63, of Chaffee, was driving his mini-van on State Route 39 in the town of Arcade when he hit the cow.

The cow had wandered onto the road after getting outside of the fence line of a nearby pasture.

The cow died in the accident.  Kleever was not injured.

State troopers say Kleever failed roadside sobriety tests and then failed a breath test.

He was arrested and later released.  He'll head back to court on a later date to answer to the charge.

The owner of the cow was called to the scene to remove the animal.
