MYFOXNY.COM -

A smoke condition in the control tower at Newark-Liberty International Airport is under investigation.

It comes after the incident resulted in a ground stop on air traffic operations for the tower on Tuesday.

FAA officials say control tower workers were relocated to an alternate site to handle air traffic.

The smoke was reported in an elevator shaft of the tower, according to the FAA.

"Air traffic controllers are now managing air traffic at the alternate site and will remain there until the issue in the tower is resolved," said Arlene Salac, FAA spokesperson.

The FAA's website is reporting delays on flights leaving and landing at Newark airport.
