OYSTER BAY, N.Y. (AP) - A Long Island prosecutor says no charges will be filed against police officers who shot and killed a knife-wielding suspect.

Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice issued a report Tuesday on the Aug. 30, 2011, shooting. The prosecutor says no potential criminal charges will be presented to a grand jury.

Kurt Doerbecker was shot by police outside his Point Lookout home. Police were attempting to question him about a reported break-in of a nearby home.

The DA's report says the suspect refused to obey an order to drop a knife and then charged at officers.

Doerbecker's family has filed a federal lawsuit claiming the police actions were unjustified. The family's attorney did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
