Melanie Rossomando of New Jersey said she had a good reason to jump from a stalled boardwalk ride: to get out of the path of an oncoming thunderstorm.

"In my mind it was a metal death-trap," Rossomando said.

Rossomando was at the Jersey Shore to celebrate her birthday.

She was on the Sky Ride at Seaside Heights when she saw the fast moving storm approaching.

"We were three seats away from getting off and then it stopped," Rossomando said.

The teen started screaming as she saw lightning and decided that staying in the all-metal contraption was way too dangerous.

Rossomando dropped her belongings and vaulted off the chairlift and fell to the beach below.

Someone shot video of the terrifying moments on their phone.

Rossomando told Fox 5 that she suffered some bumps and bruises but was doing fine.

"Thank God I didn't break anything," Rossomando said.

The Casino Pier amusement park's chair ride was in standby mode when the power went out.

Rossomando said he supports her daughter's decision to trust her instincts and jump.

"It was self-preservation because you could see a little lightning and someone did get killed in Monmouth County from lightning in that storm," Pete Rossomando said.
