FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. (WJBK) -

American Idol Season 11 winner Philip Phillips is in town performing in the American Idol Live 2012 Tour.  It kicks off Friday night at the Joe Louis Arena in Detroit.  This is Phillips first time visiting the Motor City.  Friday morning, Jay Towers had the opportunity to ask him some questions at the Fresh 100 studios in Farmington Hills.

What it's like to go from his old life to this new life after Idol?

"It's definitely different now.  Everywhere I go people know me, and I don't mind.  It's fun meeting new people and fans and whatnot, and I enjoy it.  I'm still trying to get used to it, though."

The rocker from Leesburg, Georgia, who should have an album out later this year,  also explained why he likes Detroit's own Eminem.

"His lyrics are just amazing.  He's an insane rapper and just an artist and there's no one like him, in my opinion, and I love trying to figure out the meaning of some of his songs," said Phillips.  "I really respect him ... for saying what he wants to and not really caring."

So, is he connecting with some of his old Idol friends for the first time really since winning?

"They've been really good to me.  They haven't left me out in the rain or anything, so it's been fun having good times with them and talking and just catching up."
