Charlie is one smart dog. When Fourth of July fireworks got a little too loud at a family party in Leonia, N.J., Charlie got spooked and took off.
After a 12-hour hike, the German shepherd mix was spotted on the George Washington Bridge, where he was rescued. Charlie actually lives with his owner in Manhattan.
Tom Robinson, the owner, said Charlie must have been going with what was familiar. He has never walked over the bridge before, but has been driven many times.
Police and animal control found him on the lower level of the bridge headed toward the city. The officers believe he was sprayed by a skunk and hit by a car. He needed some stitches but was otherwise fine.
Thankfully, he was tagged and registered, so rescuers were able to track down Charlie's owner.
