DETROIT (WJBK) -

Police say one person is dead and another critically injured after a driver sped through a busy Detroit intersection and collided with another vehicle Friday morning.

FOX 2's Al Allen reports a driver speeding northbound along Van Dyke disregarded a non-functioning traffic light and smashed into a Cadillac crossing the intersection at 7 Mile Road shortly before 7 a.m.

The impact drove the Cadillac up on to the nearby curb, taking down two poles along the way.

Witnesses say the intersection's traffic signals have been out since strong storms moved through area on Wednesday evening. "A whole lot of lights have been out throughout the city," said Renita Moore who lives near the crash site.

It is not known yet which of the drivers lost their life. The identities of both victims have not been released.
