Dog dehydrated, sun sick after Scotty Meyer rescue

ELLSWORTH, Wis. (KMSP) -

Though hundreds gathered to try to find him, 5-year-old Scotty Meyer was found by volunteer Jason Moser of Ellsworth man, along with his dog, Autumn.

"I could hear him," Moser recalled. "My dog was just a little ways ahead of me and I didn't know if Scotty saw the dog or just was terrified from being out there so long -- but I heard him and then, his bare skin sticks right out there in the woods. It was easy to see him, so I just started running."

Deputies rewarded Autumn for her role in the rescue, but by Wednesday, it seemed the trek took as much out of her as it did the little boy, who spent a night in the hospital to recovery from the effects of his exposure.

"She's got some sores even on the back of her feet," said Becky Behrendt, at the Pierce Veterinary Clinic, "and her white blood cell count is a little high, so we put her on some fluids and some antibiotics."

The Mosers say that after going on to search on Tuesday afternoon and again on Wednesday morning, their pooch was pooped out. Still, when she still didn't want to walk by Wednesday night and didn't want to eat as of Thursday morning, they took her to the veterinary clinic.

"I think [her condition] is because of the heat and the rocky terrain," said Behrendt.

Autumn should make a full recovery with a little well-deserved rest and relaxation.
